Dr. Khalid A. Mufti was born in Peshawar on 31st Dec. 1944 and after qualifying MBBS in 1969, received his Diploma in psychological Medicine from England in 1974 and subsequently became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1975 by examination. He joined the Provincial Govt. service in Pakistan in 1976 .Through his scholarly dedication achieved a Professor status in 1990. Prior to his retirement he was the Head , department of Psychiatry Khyber Teaching Hospital as well as the Principal Khyber Medical College Peshawar Pakistan.
During this period he was involved periodically as a principal resource person in organizing psychiatric services in NWFP, e.g. establishing Dept. of psychiatry PGMI LRH, District Hospital Mardan, DHQ Hospital Dera Ismail Khan and later strengthened and upgraded the Dept. of Psychiatry Khyber Medical College Peshawar. He took a lead in the training of postgraduate nursing and as such helped towards human resources development. Similarly a number of psychologists, social workers were trained in the field of drug addiction treatment/ rehabilitation and mental illness.
Many of them are now working throughout health Dept. of NWFP. His efforts in postgraduate teaching in psychiatry have yielded a number of specialists in this field. Dr Mufti has remained as Member Federal Mental Health Authority Government Of Pakistan for 5 years and was selected again till to date. He took an initiative way back in 1983 in mobilizing the community resources against drug abuse though numerous seminar, conference, workshop, community groups and NGO activities. Thus he created great social awareness among the policy makers, administrators and masses through media (Radio, TV and Newspapers). He conducted innumerable camps in the outreach areas for mentally sick community and also educated many family and primary health care physicians in the field of mental health and drug addiction. His brain child, NGO Green December Moment received International recognition. Late on another NGO Horizon was added to it and till to date is He has conducted free large medical camps for the outreach community such as Miranshah. His pioneering efforts in the identification, treatment/ rehabilitation of psychiatric problem in Afghan Refugees in 1980s motivated international relief agencies to take keen interest for the welfare of Afghan orphans. The Pak Red Crescent Society has given him special award in 1986 and gold medal for this effort against drug abuse in 1986, 87 and 99. In the post September 11 period he delivered psychiatric services through undertaking a tiring journey inside Afghanistan in collaboration with two UN NGOs, while successfully delivered a number of training courses to health workers in Kabul and Jalalabad. He served as president Pakistan Psychiatric Society in year 2003.
Prof. Mufti has been cited as a reference in important national and international publications while he himself contributed a lot in the form of his research work being published in many journals, in particular about drug dependence and trauma related stress. As a Principal Khyber Medical College he involved the Medical students actively through participatory teaching program such as problems based learning exposure.
Recognizing his meritorious services, Govt. of Pakistan awarded him grade- 21. Prof. Dr. Mufti has organized the 50 years Golden Jubilee celebration of Khyber Medical College Peshawar Pakistan in Dec 2004 when Khyberians from all over the globe participated This historic event was inaugurated by The President of Pakistan who was the Chief Guest .The President also accepted the demand for a Medical University in Peshawar.
After his retirement he devoted his time and expertise in delivering services to disasters victims of Earthquake 2005 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) , flood affectees and the victims of terrorism.
Professor mufti also takes part in enjoying literature, art and music, His main passion is Spirituality .where, he has made extensive search for the past 30 years. He is fond of mysticism . VOLUNTEERISM is his main passion.
